Pash, Exit Clov, and Carol Bui at Black Cat Mainstage (20070831)

I came for Carol Bui, but missed her as I usually do when she opens (stop opening!).

The noteworthiest part of this show is the continued climb of tired sounds. Both Pash and Exit Clov excel at sounding like standard mid- to late 1990s college-radio female-lead bands. I have no idea why this trend is happening, and why it attracts such a crowd. In any event, the lead singer of Pash has a great voice–kind of the female equivalent of the lead singer of Convertible Jennifers (MD). I should note that I enjoyed Pash’s latest album enough.

Quick Thoughts On Recent Shows

There’s no way I can comment on every show I hit, but here are some quick thoughts on some recent ones:

DJ Spooky, The Gray Kid, Person @ RnR Hotel
I am not sure why every legit, high-quality act wants some lame individual MC wrapping over bedroom-made electro beats to open. Maybe because everyone will be so disgusted that they can’t help but like the headliner? This was the third or fourth show in a month that had this happen. Oh well, DJ Spooky was absolutely incredible, and cool to boot (MA and I chatted with him for a second after the show). He mentioned some new projects so hopefully he’ll be touring soon.

Lady Sovereign @ 930 Club
Good show, although crowd was lame (young, restless, not into the music, only into the TRL-ness of it) and S-O-V had way too much attitude–just play the music, that’s what we’re paying you for!

Girl Talk @ BC M
Not always great music but he sure does rock the crowd.
