Five Most Disappointing Albums Of The Year

In no order:

  • MIA – Arular
  • V/A – Run the Road, Volume 02
  • Rock remix albums (Yes, I knew they would be bad, but still; e.g., Beck’s Guerolito, Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm Remixed, Death From Above 1979’s Romance Bloody Romance: Remixes & B-Sides)
  • Weezer – Make Believe
  • White Stripes, The – Walking With A Ghost + 4 Live Tracks

What kind of top 20 list is that anyway? First, they have way more than 20 albums. Second, they have Kanye West’s “Late Registration” near the top which just about rules them out of being worth referring to. (Note: Many lists that had MIA had Kanye West. Draw conclusions.)

True, it is her first album, but it was hyped by the entire music community and it is, in my opinion of course, quite bad. Ergo, I was disappointed. Second, the “Piracy Funds Terrorism, Volume 01” album with Diplo is much better (even according to M.I.A. fans).

Have you listed to the M.I.A. album? She can’t carry an entire song, making for a fairly weak album. Diplo recognize this and uses her mainly for hooks or bit parts, using other samples, effects, people, or tricks (e.g., mash ups) to make an incredibly strong party album.
